Stalk Your Favorite Supreme Court Justices With This Handy Map

Can’t get enough of Justice Scalia? Want to know when Justice Sotomayor makes a stop in your town? Figuring out how to stalk your favorite Supreme Court justice isn’t as hard as it might seem, thanks to a handy map that lets you know where the justices have been, are, and will be.

SCOTUS Map is a project of Victoria Kwan and Jay Pinho and regularly lists the public appearances of the Supreme Court nine. Let’s poke around.

The winter months aren’t the busiest for the Supreme Court. Sure, there are briefs to read, opinions to write, and petitions for cert to deny. But there are fewer oral arguments (the first oral argument in February is scheduled for the 22nd) and things tend to operate on a slower pace, leaving plenty of time for travel.

So where did the justices go this season?

Justice Breyer: Everywhere. Justice Breyer has a new book and it shows. He far out traveled his fellow justices this winter, making ten public appearances in December and January. Two events, a lecture at Cooper Union on December 18th and the Association of American Law Schools on January 7th, were simply “conversations.” The rest were all explicitly to promote his book, “The Court and the World.”

Befittingly, he ended his January travels in Paris, giving an address on “Quelle justice pour quel avenir?” for the inaugural Nuit des Idées. (That’s “what justice for what future” for the first Night of Ideas, for the nonfrancophones.)

Justice Sotomayor: The Bronx. January meant a trip back to her hometown for Justice Sotomayor. She stopped in the boogie down Bronx to speak at the Renaissance Youth Center. Later the same day, Justice Sotomayor was honored as a “Partner in the Pursuit of Justice” by The Bronx Defenders.

Justice Thomas: Florida. It seems that Justice Thomas is the only snowbird of the group. He headed to the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law last week to lecture in the school’s property and constitutional law classes. We’re sure it was a welcome break, coming just a few days after Winter Storm Jonas.

Aside from Justice Scalia’s visit to Louisiana in early January, no other justice traveled south of Washington, D.C. this winter.

Justice Scalia: Onwards to Asia. Justice Scalia’s travels were decidedly domestic (and often religious) earlier this winter, but all that changed in February. Today, the justice touched down in Hong Kong, where he will spend two days discussing the law, democracy, and interpretation.
