Sunday Oliseh has resigned from his job as chief coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, seven months after he was appointed.
The 41 year-old coach made his decision known on Twitter, citing “contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and himself” as reasons for quitting.
“I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having had the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria”, he said.
His resignation came on the tail of a decision by the Nigerian Football Federation to make him report to Shuaibu Amodu, the National Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Chris Green, the Chairman, NFF’s Technical and Development Committee, had said the decision was for easy coordination.
“Shuaibu Amodu is the National Technical Director and as such he is involved in all the games of the national teams, whether in the under-17, under-20 or Super Eagles.”
The decision also came less than a month to Nigeria’s crucial matches against the Pharaohs of Egypt for the 2017 Nations Cup.
Oliseh’s seven month reign as has been on a roller coaster. He has not heard the best of relationship with his employers, especially following the exit of Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team from the Rwanda African Nations Championship tournament at the group stage.
Then Oliseh himself angered Nigerians with his You Tube rant, where he called his critics ‘insane’.
As coach, he has always had to shuttle between Nigeria and Belgium to cope his fragile health.
There was no reaction yet from the NFF, as many of the chiefs are now in Zurich, Switzerland to attend FIFA Special Congress, which will elect a new president for the scandal-hit world football body.
