President Muhammadu Buhari will attend the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC at the end of March. The three-day event will be hosted by President Barack Obama between March 30 and April 1.
An initial list of delegates released showed that President Buhari will be accompanied to Washington by three Governors and six Ministers. The final list is expected to be higher when technical experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as other Ministries, Departments and aides of relevant political office holders are added.
The preliminary list prepared by the presidency will also include 11 principal officers and a 23-member Advance team that includes a medical doctor, Protocol officers, State House media, bodyguards and a cook.
According to reports, a presidential trip on the average costs Nigerian taxpayers between $500,000 (five hundred thousand dollars) and $1,200,000 in travelling expenses. The President’s last visit to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, cost the nation over $3,000,000 (three million dollars).
The aim of the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit is to address the threat of nuclear terrorism to global security through international cooperation to secure vulnerable nuclear materials, break up black markets, and detect and intercept illicit;y trafficked materials.
