As it had announced in previous days and weeks, the Nigerian Army said on Friday that it had killed at least 40 members of Boko Haram in Borno State and completely destroyed the terrorists’ camp in Alajeri.

“Following reliable information on the presence of some Boko Haram terrorists,” Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the Acting Director Army Public Relations for the Nigerian Army said in a statement, “troops of 113 Battalion conducted a fighting patrol to Dunga general area on Thursday during which they discovered and destroyed a Boko Haram terrorists’ camp at Alajeri village in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State”.

“In the operation, the troops killed 40 Boko Haram terrorists and captured 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade 7 ( RPG 7), 6 AK-47 rifles, 2 Fabrique Nationale rifles, 10 magazines, 188 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition and 64 rounds of  7.62mm (Special) ammunition. Other items recovered by the troops  included 3 mobile phones, 6 copies of Holy Quran and 20 Motorcycles,” he added.

He said Nigerian troops were “in high spirits because of the success of the operation coupled with the fact that there was no casualty or injury on the part of the troops”.

He added: “Operations to clear all known Boko Haram terrorists camps and hideouts are ongoing as troops remain committed to the clearance and apprehension of the Boko Haram terrorists in the country”.

Boko Haram has killed more than 25,000 people in Nigeria in seven years and over 1300 in Cameroon since 2013, including at least 70 soldiers there.

Last December, the Nigerian government claimed that the terrorists had been defeated, but since then confrontation after confrontation seems to show that the war is still far from being over.
