President Muhammadu Buhari declared on Wednesday that the “final end of Boko Haram is in sight” after two female suicide bombers killed at least 22 people and injured 18 others in bomb attacks near the city of Maiduguri in Borno State.

Nigeria’s National Management Emergency Agency, NEMA, said the first attack in Umarari village targeted a mosque while the second one occured about 50 metres away.

“22 people were #killed and 18 others sustained various degrees of #injuries. #Wounded evacuated to Molai General Hospital,” NEMA said on Twitter.

The attacks occured as Muslim worshippers gathered at mosques for their early morning prayers.

Boko Haram, which is trying to carve out a caliphate in the Lake Chad Basin, has killed more than 25,000 people in Nigeria in seven years and over 1300 in Cameroon since 2013, including at least 70 soldiers there. Hundreds have been also killed in Chad and Niger, the four countries plus Benin Republic engaged in military operations against the ruthless militants.

Buhari in a statement by his spokesman Femi Adesina assured that “with the current renewed determination of the Nigerian security agencies, coupled with the regional and international attention constantly now focused on the eradication of terrorism, the final end of Boko Haram is in sight”

He said “the condemnable and reprehensible attack on a place of worship by perpetrators who pretended to be worshippers, has once again exposed them as mere criminals who have no place among civilized people”.

He expressed his deepest sympathy and condolence to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Borno over the incident and wished speedy recovery to those injured.

Buhari commended the security agencies and care givers for their prompt deployment to the area and  reaffirmed that “those who perpetrate, finance, organise and sponsor these reprehensible acts of terrorism will not escape punishment”.

He implored Nigerians to continue to remain vigilant to the antics of “these lawless individuals and cooperate with the relevant government agencies in our unshaken resolve to defeat the enemy”.

He prayed that Almighty Allah receive the souls of the departed.
