Following satisfactory meeting and agreement reached with all the Stakeholders involved in the operation of the Mile 12 Market, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered the immediate re-opening of the Mile 12 Market, a statement by Information Commissioner and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde said on Thursday.
Mr. Ayorinde said the re-opening was “as a result of the outcome of the Stakeholders meeting held between the Market Men/Women, Traditional Leaders in the Community, Residents and Community Development Association”.
The stakeholders, the government said, have agreed on the following.
– Relocation of the Market to another suitable location as the existing market can no longer contain the traders.
– Ban on the use of Commercial Motorcycles (Okada Riders) in the area.
– Co existence amongst all ethnic groups in the Market and environs
– Removal of all shanties and illegal attachments/structures within the Market area.
– Market operation to be confined within the market area.
– No Street Trading and with the promise to trade in a clean and hygienic environment.
The Mile 12 Market was shut by the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on March 3, 2016, after ethnic clashes between Yoruba and Hausa in the area. Many people were killed while houses and cars were set on fire.
