The final declaration has not been made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but from the results gathered so far in various local government areas, it seems the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) dominated the legislative rerun elections in Rivers State on Saturday and punished the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party of President Muhammadu Buhari and Rotimi Amaechi.
SimonAtebaNews cannot declare the results before the electoral body but the PDP was already celebrating in the state and on Twitter as millions refused to sleep but rather stayed awake all night to guard against potential falsification of results.
Using lamps and candles, Nigerians in the oil rich but impoverished state stayed at ward levels to watch against accusations that five billion naira had been shipped from Abuja to truncate the wishes of the people in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We want to thank thousands of Rivers people for staying awake all night to protect their votes & ensure those killed didn’t die in vain,” PDP said on Twitter on Sunday morning.

In many places where results had been announced, the margin between the PDP and the APC was wide.
For instance, Major Jack of the PDP won the Akuku-Toru State Assembly Election with 11, 624 votes while the APC got only 810 votes. The Labour Party came far behind with only 109 votes.

Many other results followed the same trend, a total punishment for the APC and a rebuke to Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation who hails from the state and opposed former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
While Mr. Amaechi was seen as a hero in many parts of Nigeria, he was perceived as a betrayer for opposing Mr. Jonathan who is from the Niger Delta and whose wife, Patience, hails from Rivers State.
It was a bloody election. At least seven people were killed and many others were injured or abducted.
“The Nigerian Army was turned into APC Army in this #RiversReRun and was taking directives from Rotimi Amaechi. They killed innocent people,” PDP alleged on Twitter. APC was mainly silent all night, probably humbled by defeat.
