The United States government on Thursday delivered 160 tons of military equipment to the Cameroonian armed forces to fight #BokoHaram, Ambassador Michael S. Hoza said in a Facebook post, the same day three suicide bombers were blowing themselves up in the country’s far north along the border with Nigeria where the world’s deadliest terrorists are based.
Two suicide bombers blew themselves up at Nguetchewe locality in the Mayo-Moskota department on Thursday evening, killing themselves and a student called Moïse Tissabe who was studying at the Mozogo high school, said local newspaper, L’Oeil du Sahel.
On Thursday morning, a suicide bomber blew himself up in Cavaye area in Kerawa, killing himself and a tailor called Abba Cavaye. Two persons were injured in the blast.
In between the three bombings, L’Oeil du Sahel said, a man was kidnapped in Tolkomari area, following a Boko Haram attack, his cattle were taken away in the same area where five women were kidnapped while working on their farms on Tuesday, February 2.
These attacks came barely a week after suicide bombers in Bodo killed 37 people and injured more than 70. They also attacked a school in Kerawa, killing several people and injuring many, just days after the Bodo massacre.
With blood flowing every day and a terrified population fleeing the risky area, the United States delivered military equipment on Thursday to Cameroon, saying that the delivery “reflects the United States of America’s growing security partnership with Cameroon”.
“This equipment is intended for the security forces of Cameroon as they engage in critical efforts to defend this nation and all Cameroonians,” said the United States Ambassador to Cameroon, Michael S. Hoza
“The United States is proud to partner in support of Cameroon’s security. When we say ‘on est ensemble’ we mean it in words and in deeds, as reflected by the delivery of this equipment”.
Boko Haram has killed more than 1200 people in Cameroon between 2013 and January this year, including 67 soldiers and a policeman, the government there said in a report last month.
President Paul Biya of Cameroon has vowed many times that the military will crush the terrorists within months but with the killings and bombings continuing, many are wondering if the 83-year old leader who has been in power for 33 years still has anything to offer to a country bent by poverty and gargantuan corruption, and now by terrorism.
